Watch Out CapCut, Edits is Here!

This week, Instagram has finally launched their long awaited new video editing mobile app, “Edits.” This app creates direct competition with CapCut, which has been the number one video editing app on the Apple App store for quite some time, and is associated with TikTok. With the rise of Instagram Reels, Meta decided they wanted to create an app for their users that directly links to user profiles, making for an easy user experience, and of course to compete with TikTok and CapCut some more.

Instagram stated: “The process of making videos can be challenging, often requiring multiple apps and complicated workflows. With Edits, you now have a dedicated space with powerful capabilities for video creation.”

As a social media coordinator myself, I have been patiently waiting for this release, as CapCut is not my favorite mobile editing app. I found the app is similar to CapCut, with an inspiration page that scrolls exactly like Reels, and some really handy AI tools. You can also see your pages’ video insights and reach on the analytics tab, which is a huge feature.

What are the key features Edits has to offer? Here’s what Meta has to say:

  • Inspiration & Ideas: Creators can make notes of ideas and save inspiration to folders to keep track of possible future projects. There is also an “Inspiration” tab that scrolls just like Reels, giving creators direct ideas, audios. and content templates to use.

  • Projects Page: This grid layout page allows creators to see and manage their projects on an easy to navigate page, which makes it easy to pick up where you left off.

  • Film Directly on the App: Edits allows creators to film videos up to ten minutes directly on the app, making it a like a “one stop shop” for your video creation and editing.

  • Green Screen Feature: Not a fan of your video background? Well on Edits, you can use the green screen feature by uploading your own content!

  • Easy to use Timeline: While in editing mode, creators can easily rearrange and adjust clips to your needs.

  • Closed Captions: Automatically have Edits translate your audio into closed captions in multiple languages so your videos are accessible for everyone, and you can save a lot of time!

  • Cutouts: Need to make your video more dynamic? With the Cutouts feature, creators can isolate and “cut out” certain people or objects to move around or put on a green screen.

  • AI Animation: There are many animation features for text, transitions, and directly for your content. Be sure to try out the AI animation tools!

  • Exporting W/O Watermarks: This feature is music to my ears. Creators can download videos for posting in other apps, without the pesky watermark.

  • Direct Publishing & Tracking: Publish your videos directly to your accounts from the app, and track your analytics and insights on the insights page!

I have only created and edited one video so far since the release date earlier this week, but I do think I will use this app more than CapCut from now on. This is super handy for posting directly to the agency page I work for, and our clients. The UX is already better than CapCut’s, and the interface is sleek and modern like Instagram. I think this app, was worth the wait, and worth the hype. For now, its free, but I will not be super surprised if Meta starts charging fees for certain features soon. For those of you that like to edit content on your phone, be sure to try out the new Edits app!
