The REEL Instagram Reel Algorithm Strategy You Should be Using
Instagram Reels aren’t just copycat TikToks and trending sounds anymore, they’re a powerful tool for growth, engagement, and brand storytelling in 2025. As Instagram continues to grow, they have prioritized more short-form video content, like TikTok. Creators and businesses need to be posting Reels to stay relevant and keep engaging with their audiences. They also must stay sharp and up to date on the best practices and strategies that work with user algorithm and stand out. Whether you’re building a personal brand, managing a company account, or just trying to grow your reach, this post will walk you through the latest techniques that Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram has confirmed himself to be the best strategies and tips to help your Reel game thrive.
1. Don’t Use Logos or Water Marks: Mosseri revealed if you’re placing watermarks and logos over your Reels, they will not do as well with the algorithm. Something I tend to do for the agency page I manage is subtly include our logo within our videos by showing the sticker logo on our laptops, wearing a branded hat or sweatshirt in the video, etc. (see example below)
2. Keep your Reels less than 3 minutes: Mosseri advises that Reels under 3 minutes have proven to do better statistically and keep users attention better. Also, don’t forget the “3 Second Rule,” where your short form video content must capture the average users’ attention in 3 seconds or less before they scroll! I would advise keeping most of your Reels under 1 minute if you can, because the shorter Reels I have made for clients have proven to have the highest engagement and watch time.
3. Always Add Audio: Whether it’s background music, a voice over, or a trending sound, audio will always be a perk to Reels, and will result in a much more engaging and entertaining post.
4. Stay Consistent: Stick to a content schedule that works for you and your team. Remember quality always over quantity. Follow your brand or clients tone, theme, style, and humor if applicable in every post. Consistency will create memorable, sticky content for your audience to enjoy.
5. Experiment: Not all content will perform well. Experiment with different trends, audios, and types of videos to see what resonates most with your unique audience! Trial Reels is also a great resource to use!
Keep in mind, every post is different. Each brand has their own goals, objectives, and audiences, so what may work well for them, may not work as well for you. Always plan your reach, is the goal of your Reel to sell a product or service, or gain new followers? Be sure to pay attention to your analytics such as engagement rate, watch time, and overall viewership, these numbers will really help you see what may or may not be working well for your page. Lastly, always prioritize making highly shareable and interactive content, because that is overall what users are looking for and give their scrolling time to!
