4 Ways Social Media Spreads Good Vibes
I have been a user on social media since 2014. I joined social originally to connect with my older sisters and watch entertaining video content. As I grew older and evolved, social media did too. It’s crazy to think that I had an Instagram account before there were Stories, Reels, and DMs, and I had a Vine account never knowing it would shut down.
Today, I work as a Social Media Coordinator, planning and creating content for clients, and it has become my career path and profession. The way I consume and use social media has changed a lot in 10 years. I know a lot of people have grown to really dislike social media, and it has a lot of negative connotations around each platform. While yes, there is a lot of negativity and “bad” on social, I do believe there is a lot of “good” to social media, (good thing since I’ve made my career consumed by it). Allow me to give you 4 reasons I believe social media can and has been used for good:
Making Connections + Community Building: Social media have proven to play a large role in making connections and building online communities. There are thousands of online communities and groups that share hobbies, interests, and ideas. Social can help people find support networks that create spaces where people can feel supported and heard.
Endless Learning Opportunities: I learn something new everyday on social media, whether its a new “life hack,” recipe, or current events and news going on the world. PR Daily reports that about half of the users under 30 years old on TikTok use the platform regularly for their news source. Social media is a resource to be there to educate people on every topic you can think of. Just think about how there is a tutorial for everything on YouTube and TikTok.
Job Opportunities + Business Development: The rise of social media has also evolved in industries, jobs, college majors, and content creation as we know it. A decade ago, Social Media Coordinators, Managers, Creators, and Strategists were not common job titles we see today. Social also has helped local and global small businesses grow and reach new audiences. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram have been key tools for small business owners and freelancers to use and leverage and engage with target audiences and build a bigger consumer base.
Below is a quick video of author and business woman, Lauren Kay Writes, describing how TikTok helped her brand thrive, via YouTube Shorts.
Online Activism + Advocacy: Social media has become a hub for online activism, by giving people a platform to raise awareness and create impact for social change. Everybody has a voice and a platform now with social media where content can spread quickly. While online activism can be a little surface level at times, it does create education and awareness that can blossom into meaningful change and empower people to make a difference and stand up for social issues worldwide.
In Conclusion…
Social media is not all that bad, it can be a powerful source of good, and entertainment. From making connections, to building your online brand, to spreading awareness and positivity, social media can be used to bring good vibes and new learning opportunities every day! When used with care, balance, and respect, social media can absolutely be good.
